Megalomaria

Overview

One of Kotobukiya’s various model kit offerings, Megalomaria Unlimited Universe (usually shortened to just Megalomaria) distinguishes itself from fellow mecha musume toylines Frame Arms Girl and Megami Device firstly by aesthetic and then by lore. Aesthetically, the Anothers (the characters depicted by the kits) resemble robots far more heavily, in a way almost resembling puppet-like Warframes rather than the traditional shinki aesthetic.  The first kit, Principal, was dropped in early 2024. 

The lore behind Megalomaria is a trip. To summarise, it exists within Sousai Shoujo Teien’s (mentioned below) world as a tokusatsu series, revolving around Triggers, who have the ability to control the monstrous Anothers that would otherwise prey upon humanity. Maria Kagaribi (played by Sousai Shoujo Teien’s Kuon Yakushiji) and Sana Akabishi (derived from Kotobukiya’s Hexa Gear line where her counterpart is the antagonist) are the main characters and the primary line of defense against the Anothers, wielding their own Anothers akin to JoJo’s Stands.

In keeping with its tie-in with Sousai Shojo Teien, many Megalomaria kits are crosspromoted with Sousai Shojo Teien prominently; in particular, Megalomaria Emulator made the jump to the sister line as the Schoolgirl Emulator kit, to be released in late 2026, and both lines are designed to be cross-compatible with each other. 

Construction and Engineering

Sporting the expected high quality architecture and plastic quality characteristic of Kotobukiya kits, Megalomaria is an absolute treat to build, benefitting from being their first kit line to be fully constructed in Japan. The average Megalomaria kit is very straight-forward to build, with no frills or tricks necessary. Their compatibility with Sousai Shojo Teien is simply the cherry on top. 

The articulation is a point of interest in this line, with advertising showing off the sheer flexibility of the kits. The Maria kit in particular is advertised as having 81 points of articulation. 

Aesthetics:

Aesthetically, in our honest opinion, Megalomaria may just be the best line Kotobukiya has conceived of aside from Sousai Shojo Teien. The marionette-like Anothers are some of the most unique-looking kits in the girlpla market, and even the human-like Anothers like the Emulators and Vanguard variants look just unique enough to avoid resembling a Megami or Frame Arms Girl. 

For those looking for male model kits to build, look no further than Zirconia and Mephisto. For those looking for a more fantastical bent, the tengu-like Zekuu, kitsune-like Fuuma and goblinesque Grin Doll are always a good time. And for those leaning into the more robotic part of the line, Penetrator, Principal and Peridot have you covered.  There is something for everyone in the Megalomaria toyline, and there is not a bad choice to make.

Ease of Acquisition:

Megalomaria hovers comfortably in the middle range of prices alongside SST, usually commanding prices within the ¥5000-6000 (£23-28/$31-38) range. Anywhere you can find Kotobukiya products, you can find Megalomaria, fitting for a line so based on its connections to other Koto properties.

 Personal Verdict?

Quite possibly one of the best model kit toylines from Kotobukiya, Megalomaria stands out from the pack with all-around high quality, pristine aesthetic design and a hell of a selling point in cross-promotion with other Kotobukiya lines. There’s something for everyone in this line and whatever kit (or kits) you choose to build from here, you will not regret it.
