Kadokawa Plastic Model Series

Overview 

Kadokawa’s toy division is largely known for its bishoujo figures of its various properties; being one of the largest publishers, if not the largest in Japan, Kadokawa owns the publishing rights on everything from Oshi no Ko to KonoSuba, and so has produced a glut of merchandise on the glut of franchises they have the rights to.

However, in 2024, Kadokawa made its first foray into the model kit market, announcing its Plastic Model Series, dropping its first kit, KonoSuba’s favorite explosive wizard Megumin, in August 2024. Kits of Misaka Mikoto (A Certain Scientific Railgun) and Ai Hoshino (Oshi no Ko) followed in early and late 2025. 

Construction and Engineering

These kits are, truth be told, pretty middle of the line when it comes to construction. While Kadokawa’s in-house manufacturers aren’t known for their model kits, unlike certain other lines produced by people who wanted to cash in on the girlpla market, Kadokawa’s kits are competently made, perhaps a side-effect of being experienced in bishoujo figure creation, with good to great plastic quality, decent articulation and decent engineering, albeit not to the heights achieved with Machineca or Bandai’s own in-house style. 

These kits are also not difficult, perhaps because they’re aimed at a slightly different market from the usual girlpla crowd, with no tricky pieces of engineering that you might find in a Nuke Matrix or more complex Megami Device kit. As such, while it would be advisable to start with something a bit easier, a rookie could theoretically pick up a Plastic Model Series kit of their favorite character and start there without too much difficulty – which, honestly, might be the appeal for someone who wants merch, but can’t quite afford the more expensive pieces.

Aesthetics:

Kadokawa Plastic Model Series has a very generic name for a plastic model line, and that makes sense; the true stars of the show aren’t the kits, it’s the characters they’re of. Similar to GSC’s PLAMATEA, Bandai’s 30 Minutes Preference and some of the collab kits done by Kotobukiya, the entire appeal of this line is to have your favorite characters on your wall in model kit form. As such, aesthetically, the line will largely appeal to people who like the properties these characters are from. If you don’t care for, say, Bunny Girl Senpai, Mushoku Tensei or Date a Live, you won’t miss anything by missing this line out.

Ease of Acquisition:

Kits will usually go for somewhere around ¥7500 (£35/$47) for the default versions and ¥9000 (£42/$56) for the deluxe versions that carry swimsuit-clad versions of the girls. The value of an extra model (and spare backup hands and feet) for a fraction of the price is insane, so if you are looking to buy one, maybe consider this – assuming you’re okay with the swimsuits. Some physical storefronts may have these, but your best bet is online stores.

Stock isn’t too hard to find, but the asking price relative to the actual content may be a bit shocking for girlpla enjoyers (if not factoring in the relative value of the two bodies per deluxe kits against the price increase) – however, relative to merchandise of the girls, it tends towards cheaper than most pieces that aren’t prize figures, which may in a way be the real appeal of the kits.

Personal Verdict?

The Kadokawa Plastic Model Series is exactly what it says on the tin; a plastic model series of Kadokawa’s greatest hits, no more, no less. While not spectacular as model kits, they are nevertheless of good quality. While more expensive than most model kits for less content, they are cheaper than similar pieces of merchandise. Basically, if they make a kit of your favorite waifu (and I can’t believe I had to use that word here, never make me do that again), get her, but there’s no real reason to collect the entire set.

Personal Recommendations:

Honestly, Ai. This isn’t because Ai is a particularly great kit by any standard except aesthetics; we just really like Ai and we needed something to put in this section. And, at least, Kadokawa did her justice, unlike her own creator, so there’s that.
