Haoying and Yutyrannus (X-Play)

Overview

X-Play (also known as Xi Wan She) is a fairly obscure Chinese model kit company with only three kits to its name. Two of them are mecha based on planes, the Dragon Spirit Fighter J-20 Cangwei, and the J-35 Qiong Sheng, dropping throughout late 2025 and early 2026. However, the first kit they created was an outlier – the dinosaur themed Yutyrannus. In 2024, they released two versions of the Yutyrannus; a Yutyrannus by itself, and a version coming with a rider and partner girl, Haoying.

As an aside, the dinosaur is also variously labeled Hao Ryu and Longji, and the girl is called Haoying or Hotaru depending on if the site is translating from Chinese or Japanese. For the sake of consistency, we will be referring to them as Yutyrannus and Haoying.

Construction and Engineering

As a first effort from a company that eventually pivoted to making pure mecha instead of girlpla, Haoying and Yutyrannus are not terribly constructed. The plastic quality, though definitely inferior to their Japanese counterparts as well as their more premium counterparts at MS General, is still serviceable. Yutyrannus is a fairly difficult kit, and definitely saved for someone with quite a few kits under their belt. However, the end result feels slightly like an off-brand Zoids kit, in a positive way.

Haoying is fairly simple by comparison; however, her shoddy engineering makes her feel like a bit of an afterthought, especially in comparison to Yutyrannus. She isn’t particularly articulate, either, though she is definitely functional.

Aesthetics:

The standout with this kit really is the Yutyrannus. With a beautiful metallic red coat and an absolutely badass design, the Yutyrannus is, overall, really cool. The same can’t really be said for Haoying, who almost feels like an afterthought, as mentioned above.

With a fairly generically anime design that resembles a midpoint between MS General’s kits and an ASRA, Haoying isn’t much to look at. The weapons that accompany Haoying, however, are pretty cool, coming with a small energy saber, a large lance almost her height in length, a shield and a greatsword. Our personal favorite of those was the greatsword, but all of her weapons are cool – and, more importantly, better looking than their wielder.

Ease of Acquisition:

This kit has since been discontinued, and with very little information available on the English-speaking side of the Internet on X-Play, it’s hard to say when or if they ever plan to reprint. Secondhand copies can be found on AliExpress hovering somewhere between £20-30 (roughly $30-40).

Personal Verdict?

This kit barely feels like it fits on here; the best part of the entire kit is easily the dinosaur and not the girl that comes with it. As a mecha kit, it’s a pretty solid addition to the roster. As a girlpla, you can skip it.
