Overview
AMAKUNI (tl; Heaven) is a brand built up by Hobby Japan’s Product Planning Department, largely known for their bishoujo figures. Hobby Japan itself has a long and storied history from its humble origins selling car minatures out of a small shop in Tokyo in 1955, including its eponymous hobby magazine as well as the Uchusen magazine talking about science-fiction and tokusatsu.
In 2025, AMAKUNI announced it was taking pre-orders for its new girlpla line GALHolic. Focusing on heavily sexualised gyaru-themed model kits designed by Shashaki (who has only one work to their name, which is of course I’m an Otaku but I Want to Fall In Love with a Gal), the first kit, Nanaho, would release in early 2026 and Mio would follow in the later part of the year. The toyline would also come with mousepads and dakimakura covers. Because of course.
Construction and Engineering
Most reception to these kits revolve around the absolutely shocking knee joints (especially in comparison to fellow high school-themed Sousai Shoujo Teien with more natural-looking knees), the neck joint being pretty janky and the waist joint being a shocking mess. The plastic, at least, does not appear to have been a major complaint and everything else appears to be of reasonable quality.
Aesthetics:
Suffice to say, this is not a line for those of modest dispositions. It is high school girls with leopard print bras and breasts spilling out of their uniforms in an almost obscenely ludicrous fashion. If you’re into that, or were fans of AMAKUNI’s previous output, you’re gonna enjoy it. If you’re not, maybe consider Sousai Shojo Teien or the Camio model kit instead.
For our money, we’d maybe consider buying one if they could at least put their breasts back into the uniform. Or knock it off with the leopard print bra. Or have knees that don’t look like they’ll break if we sneezed on them hard enough.
Ease of Acquisition:
Largely available through AmiAmi (due to their working relationship with Hobby Japan), though some other sites will have them, the GALHolic kits retail at around ¥7880 (£ 37/$49).
