Genei is a very, very interesting creature of a model kit manufacturer. Not because of their output – the Genei Full Action Plastic Model kits aren’t nearly the name that PLAMATEA, 30 Minutes Label or Megami Device are – but for being a really weird anomaly of a company in this guide.
The company – at least to our limited resources in the West – is about as mysterious as its name. From what company information we have access to regarding Genei, they were founded prior to 2015, and moved from Funabashi City in Chiba to their current premises in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture in 2016.
Their first noted activities were in 2015, when they worked on Ultraman X doing 3DCG modelling. Indeed, most of their activities appear to have been about 3DCG modelling as a whole, managing to get credits on series as diverse as Sword Art Online, Nier Automata, Mobile Suit Gundam and Lycoris Recoil.
They also dabbled in music composition, a field in which they were significantly less successful, with a few obscure shows to their name, aside from Oregairu (go Totsuka!). They also offered services of figure prototyping and producing character goods; aside from the Genei Full Action Plastic Model kits, they also produced an entire line of character goods for The Ancient Magus Bride.
In 2018, Genei would join the girlpla parade with its Genei Full Action Plastic Model line, even advertising additional garage kits to add onto their Mary and Phina kits (the first two released and the only two to be released at traditional retail), as well as creating a model kit of Sakura, the protagonist from the unreleased Megazone 23 Xi, who was created to raise funds to, well, release it.
That fundraiser would never go anywhere despite hitting 120% of this funding goal. As of 2026, Megazone 23 is still dormant.
And…that is where Genei seems to just disappear as a company. Their website, while still up, advertises Hathaway’s Flash as the most recent work they did, and the GFP models as the last article.
This is not to say Genei was done; after some searching, we happened to stumble upon their Twitter account, where, much to our shock, Genei was actually still alive, but having almost entirely swapped to the business of producing garage kits, akin to the small outfits of the 80s, surfacing at WonFes, Hobby Round and other events in collaboration with artist Vividness. They do so to this day, having since iterated on their GFP designs.
However, as far as we know, they never again touched their animation work or indeed most of their work aside from working on garage kits.
Really, we place them here because this company is an absolute oddball, and this is as much about soliciting information on Genei as it is explaining what we, as uninformed outsiders, can decipher. If you, lucky reader, know anything about what drove Genei to transition full time to garage kit creation, or indeed more about their history than we’ve written down, please let us know (and also provide sources).
