Overview
Hemoxian is a Chinese model kit developer known for quality, and is one of the names to look out for with regards to Chinese model kit quality – you will see their names arise in connection to beloved kits like Jiulian and their OVER ZERO series. Big Firebird is another Chinese producer largely known for action figures and third-party Transformers figures, with its most recent collaboration being with Good Smile to produce the IMG-01 Insect Mecha Girl in 2024.
In 2023, these two companies collaborated to create a mecha musume model kit, Kelly Janet, split between the girl/pilot and the bird-themed robot which could act as her mount and fuse with her to turn into her armor.
Construction and Engineering
Starting with the negatives, the plastic quality isn’t great and the tolerances can be iffy, especially when assembling Kelly herself; as such, when putting her together, sand judiciously. However, despite her small size, Kelly herself is surprisingly articulate, and her bird mecha is fairly well-engineered, especially considering that this was long before Hemoxian’s renaissance over the last two years.
Aesthetics:
The small and rounded edges of this kit make it look fairly cute, which is usually not an approach taken by mecha musume kits, but one we appreciate. Kelly Janet herself isn’t particularly outstanding outside of her petite frame, resembling something closer to a Harvin or a Lalafell, but we’ll give her some points for managing to still look in proportion despite that. Honestly, our only real complaints with her are that we wish she’d had slightly more practical clothing, but given the entire rest of the girlpla market, it’s not a huge complaint.
Ease of Acquisition:
As this kit is no longer being produced, sadly, you will have to go to the second-hand market to get your hands on her. Her prices are inconsistent, lurking somewhere around £20-40 ($26-54) on whatever sites or sellers may be offering her.
Personal Verdict?
With surprisingly high quality for a first attempt, Kelly Janet is a diamond in the rough for obscure one-off kits and, in hindsight, a positive sign for Hemoxian’s future success with the Over Zero and Jiu Lian kits.
