Overview
Ling Cage (also known as Ling Cage: Incarnation or Ling Long, roughly translated as Soul Cage) is a CGI sci-fi donghua by YHKT (Yì Huà Kāi Tiān) Entertainment from 2019. The plot revolves around a post-apocalyptic world that emerged as a result of the Manna Ecosystem disrupting the entire planet beyond the flying city known as the Lighthouse, ruled by City Lord Morgan, under whose rule class divides are enforced based on genetics and love is banned on pain of death. Surprisingly, Ling Cage managed a crossover with hit Genshin Impact ripoff Tower of Fantasy. The show currently has two seasons with a third slated for 2026, and is available for Westerners on Bilibili’s Youtube channel for free.
Chinese company Dodowo, known for the Oyasai Yousei set of figures among other sets of collectable figures, was given the task of adapting Fan Di (also known as Fandi), one of Morgan’s enforcers, to model kit form, which they duly did in 2022, with a reprint in 2023. Fan Di, as far as we know, is basically Judge Dredd if he wasn’t the protagonist and was also a voluptuous evil woman with a whip.
So, understandably, trying to find the damn thing to build it is nigh impossible. However, we did it.
Construction and Engineering
While we’re not familiar with the quality of the rest of Dodowo’s toylines, we can certainly say that Dodowo has some work to do regarding their model kits. Fan Di’s plastic quality is fairly high, which makes things a little smoother, but the articulation is fairly bad for a kit at its original price range. While the neck and legs are fairly well-articulated, arm, shoulder, wrist and torso articulation is fairly bad. The hip joint isn’t particularly great either, as its build emphasises aesthetics (that is, giving Fan Di a gigantic ass) at the cost of articulation (or indeed, looking like she even has a gigantic ass).
We will respect the use of mixed soft goods (such as her dress and whip), which helps the look.
Aesthetics
Having a more realistic appearance and build helps Fan Di stand out on the shelf, and aside from the aforementioned ass problems, Fan Di is pretty okay-looking. At least her head looks fairly unique. The kit doesn’t look too bad overall, though.
Ease of Acquisition
Remember the part where we can’t find the damn thing? It’s been discontinued for several years, with only a reprint in 2023 before Dodowo returned to doing what they do best. What few copies are likely to be found in the depths of Xianyu or Taobao. Her original retail price was ¥6400 (roughly £30/$40), so assuming you CAN find her, less than that would be an excellent price.
Personal Verdict
While it’s not the worst kit ever, unless you’re a huge fan of Ling Cage and Fan Di in particular, there’s no reason you need to go out of your way to hunt this one down.
